Egypt’s Mostafa Asal has become the latest player to qualify for the CIB PSA World Tour Finals following his victory in Hong Kong this weekend.
The Egyptian came back from two games down to defeat Peru’s Diego Elias in the final of the Everbright Securities International Hong Kong Squash Open. In doing so, he has assured himself of a place at the CIB PSA World Tour Finals, where he will be the defending champion.
The CIB PSA World Tour Finals includes both a men’s and women’s tournament featuring eight players each and brings together all PSA World Tour Platinum title winners. Any remaining places are allocated to the highest ranked players on the CIB Road to Egypt Standings, with points on offer at all PSA World Tour events during the season.
Following his win at the Hong Kong Park Sports Center, Asal now sits in 3rd spot in the men’s standings. He is behind two men who have already qualified for the season-ending event, in Diego Elias, the man he defeated on Sunday evening in Hong Kong, and Mohamed ElShorbagy.
ElShorbagy secured his spot in the CIB PSA World Tour Finals after winning the opening Platinum event of the season, the QTerminals Qatar Classic. Meanwhile, Elias claimed the crown at the U.S. Open, after winning his second major title.
The other man to already be guaranteed of a place is World No.1 Ali Farag, who lifted the CIB Egyptian Open title earlier this season. He is currently in 7th in the men’s standings, with Marwan ElShorbagy (4th), Victor Crouin (5th), Paul Coll (6th) and Tarek Momen (8th) making up the rest of the top eight.
Meanwhile, after her second Platinum victory of the season, Egypt’s Hania El Hammamy has moved up to 2nd place in the women’s standings. Following her win at the Everbright Securities International Hong Kong Squash Open, she is now only behind World No.1 Nouran Gohar, the other woman to have already qualified for the season-ending event.
El Hammamy had already assured herself of a spot at the season-ending CIB PSA World Tour Finals, thanks to her victory earlier this season at the CIB Egyptian Open.
Nour El Sherbini (3rd), Joelle King (4th), Nour El Tayeb (5th), Nele Gilis (6th) and Amanda Sobhy (7th) all have wins on the PSA World Tour this season. Welshwoman Tesni Evans makes up the top eight in the women’s standings.
